HSN and SAC code finder
Type what you sell, or the first digits of a code. The finder searches the GST portal’s list of HSN codes for goods and SAC codes for services, and shows each code with its description.
How to search
- By name: type the plain name of the goods, such as “cotton shirts” or “ceramic tiles”. Every word you type must appear in the description.
- By code: type the first digits, such as 8482, to see the heading and every code under it.
- For services: choose Services (SAC). SAC codes start with 99.
The descriptions are the official ones from the GST portal’s master, so they use trade language. If the everyday name finds nothing, try the material or the use: “footwear” in place of “chappal”, “furniture” in place of “sofa”.
How many digits you need, as of October 2026
| Turnover last financial year | Digits on invoices and in GSTR-1 |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹5 crore | 4 digits (required for sales to registered businesses) |
| More than ₹5 crore | 6 digits, on every invoice |
| Exports and imports | 8 digits |
In GSTR-1, the HSN summary is chosen from the portal’s own list and is reported separately for sales to businesses and to consumers. A code that is not in the list cannot be entered, so it is worth getting each item’s code right once.
Questions people ask
What is an HSN code?
HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature. It is the code that classifies goods under GST, used on invoices and in the HSN summary of GSTR-1. The first two digits are the chapter, the next two the heading, and further digits narrow it down to the exact product.
What is a SAC code?
SAC stands for Services Accounting Code. It classifies services under GST the way HSN classifies goods. Every SAC code has six digits and starts with 99.
How many digits of the HSN code must I show on an invoice?
As of October 2026, four digits if your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year was up to ₹5 crore, and six digits if it was more. Exports and imports use eight digits.
Do I need HSN codes on invoices to consumers?
Businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore show the HSN code on every invoice. With turnover up to ₹5 crore, the code is required on invoices to registered businesses and optional on invoices to consumers.
Does the HSN code decide the GST rate?
Yes, the rate follows the classification, but it is set by the government’s rate notifications, not by the code list. Find the code here, then confirm the rate with your CA or in the CBIC rate notifications.
