GSTIN checker
Type a 15-character GSTIN. The checker tells you at once whether it is correctly formed, and shows the state, the PAN and the type of business it belongs to.
How a GSTIN is made up
Every GSTIN has 15 characters, and each part means something. Once you can read it, you can spot a wrong one before it reaches an invoice.
| Characters | What they are | In 27AALCB4590L1Z4 |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | State code | 27 is Maharashtra |
| 3–12 | PAN of the business | AALCB4590L |
| 13 | Registration number of that PAN in the state | 1 for the first |
| 14 | Z by default | Z |
| 15 | Check character, worked out from the first 14 | 4 |
What the check covers
- The pattern: two digits, a ten-character PAN, a registration number, Z and a check character.
- The state code: one of the codes GST uses for states and union territories.
- The check character: calculated from the first 14 characters, so one wrong character is caught.
It does not confirm the legal name, or that the registration is active. Before your first sale to a new customer, look the number up on the GST portal and match the name with your order.
Questions people ask
What is a GSTIN?
A GSTIN is the 15-character Goods and Services Tax Identification Number given to every business registered under GST. It is made of the state code, the PAN, a registration number within the state, the letter Z and a check character.
Does this tool tell me whether a GSTIN is active?
No. It checks that the number is correctly formed: the right pattern, a real state code and the right check character. Whether the registration is active, cancelled or suspended is shown only by the GST portal’s Search Taxpayer page.
Why should I check a customer’s GSTIN before invoicing?
An invoice with a wrong GSTIN does not reach your customer’s GSTR-2B, so they cannot claim input tax credit and will ask you to correct it. A single mistyped character is the usual cause, and the check character catches it.
Can one business have more than one GSTIN?
Yes. A business needs a separate registration in every state it supplies from, and each has its own GSTIN. All of them carry the same PAN in characters 3 to 12.
What does the fourth letter of the PAN mean?
It shows the type of holder: P for an individual or proprietor, C for a company, F for a firm or LLP, H for a Hindu undivided family, T for a trust, A for an association of persons, and G for government.
