GST & Compliance

GSTIN

Goods and Services Tax Identification Number — the 15-character unique ID assigned to every GST-registered entity in India.

What it means

Format: 2 digits state code + 10 characters PAN of the entity + 1 digit entity number per state + 1 digit checksum + 1 alphabet (default Z). Example: 27ABCDE1234F1Z5 (the '27' is Maharashtra).

Every entity needs separate GSTIN per state where it is registered. A business operating in 5 states has 5 GSTINs — and must file separate returns for each.
