How GST is worked out

GST is charged on the taxable value: the price after any discount and before tax. To add GST you multiply the taxable value by the rate. To find the GST inside a price that already includes it, you divide the price by 1 plus the rate, which gives the taxable value; the rest is tax.

You have Formula Example at 18%
A price before GST GST = price × rate ÷ 100 ₹1,000 → GST ₹180, total ₹1,180
A price including GST Taxable value = price ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) ₹1,180 → value ₹1,000, GST ₹180

GST rates, as on 02-10-2026

Since 22-09-2025 most goods and services fall under two rates, 5% and 18%. A short list of luxury and sin goods is taxed at 40%, and essentials at 0%. Gold, silver and jewellery are at 3% and rough diamonds at 0.25%. The earlier 12% and 28% rates were withdrawn; choose “Another rate” to check an older invoice. The rate for your item depends on its HSN code; confirm it with your CA or the CBIC rate notifications.

CGST and SGST, or IGST

The rate is the same wherever you sell; only its name changes. A sale within your state carries half the rate as CGST and half as SGST (UTGST in some union territories). A sale to another state carries the full rate as IGST. Which one applies is decided by the place of supply.

Questions people ask

How do I add GST to a price?

Multiply the price by the GST rate and divide by 100, then add the result to the price. For ₹1,000 at 18%, the GST is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180.

How do I take GST out of a price that includes it?

Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. For ₹1,180 including 18% GST, ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 gives a taxable value of ₹1,000, and the GST is the remaining ₹180. Do not take 18% of ₹1,180: that gives the wrong answer.

When is it CGST and SGST, and when IGST?

When you and the place of supply are in the same state, the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. When the place of supply is in another state, the whole amount is IGST. The total tax is the same either way.

What are the GST rates in India now?

Since 22-09-2025 most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, with 40% on a short list of luxury and sin goods and 0% on essentials. Gold, silver and jewellery are at 3%, and rough diamonds at 0.25%. The old 12% and 28% rates no longer apply.

Is the GST rounded on an invoice?

Each tax amount is worked out to the paisa. Most businesses then round the invoice total to the nearest rupee and show the difference as a round-off line.
