Universal Account Number
UAN
12-digit unique number issued by EPFO that consolidates an employee's PF accounts across all employers.
What it means
UAN was introduced in 2014 to make PF portability seamless. When an employee changes jobs, the same UAN is linked to the new employer's PF account — eliminating the need to transfer or merge accounts manually. UAN must be activated by the employee on the EPFO portal to enable self-service features.
