# How to move from Tally to EaseDesk, step by step

> Pick a cut-over date at the start of a month, export your ledgers, stock items and closing balances from Tally to Excel, import them into EaseDesk with its templates, check the opening trial balance against Tally's closing one, and start billing. Most small businesses finish in a day or two.

## What moves, and what stays

You do not copy years of vouchers. You carry forward the position on one date:

- **Masters:** customers, vendors, their contacts, and items with HSN codes, units and prices.
- **Balances:** what each customer owes you, what you owe each vendor, stock in hand, and the
closing balance of every other ledger.

Everything before the cut-over date stays in Tally, where your CA can still open it.

## 1. Choose the cut-over date

Pick the first day of a month, ideally of a quarter or the financial year. File the GST return for
the period before it from Tally, so that one return never needs figures from two systems.

## 2. Export from Tally to Excel

From Tally, export to Excel:

- the list of ledgers under Sundry Debtors and Sundry Creditors, with address, GSTIN and closing
  balance;
- the stock summary, with quantity and value on the cut-over date;
- the trial balance as on the day before the cut-over date.

## 3. Set up your business in EaseDesk

Sign up, then enter your legal name, PAN, GSTIN, branch and bank account under Settings →
Organisation. Set **Books start from** to your cut-over date. See
[Set up your business](/help/getting-started/set-up-your-business).

## 4. Import customers, vendors and items

In the Directory and under Items, click **Import**, download the template and paste your Tally
lists into it. The templates have columns for GSTIN, state, credit limit, credit days and opening
balance for each customer and vendor, and for HSN code, GST rate, unit, prices, opening quantity
and opening value for each item. EaseDesk checks every row and shows what needs fixing before
anything is saved.

## 5. Enter the other opening balances

Open Accounting → Opening balances and enter the closing balance of each remaining ledger from
Tally's trial balance: bank, cash, capital, loans, fixed assets and so on. Save once debits equal
credits.

## 6. Check before you bill

Compare EaseDesk's opening [trial balance](/glossary/trial-balance) with Tally's closing one,
ledger by ledger. Check three totals in particular: receivables, payables and stock value. If
they agree, you are ready.

## 7. Start billing, and invite your CA

Issue your first invoice from the new number series, invite your team with the right roles, and
invite your CA with the free Chartered Accountant login.

## What is different from Tally

EaseDesk is online and needs an internet connection. In return, invoices, reminders and payment
links go out from the same place, each person has their own login, and nothing has to be backed
up by you. If you need offline billing or payroll today, read
[EaseDesk and Tally](/compare/easedesk-vs-tally) before you move.

## Questions

### Is there a direct import from Tally?

Not yet. A direct import from Tally is coming soon. Today you export your masters and balances from Tally to Excel and bring them in with the EaseDesk import templates.

### Do I have to move my old invoices?

No. Start EaseDesk from a cut-over date with opening balances, and keep Tally as your record for the period before it. Your CA finalises earlier years from Tally as before.

### When is the best time to switch?

The first day of a financial year is cleanest, because the books begin with the year. The first day of any month or quarter also works well, once the GST return for the period before it is filed from Tally.

### Can my CA keep using Tally?

Your CA gets a free login to EaseDesk that reads your books, GST data and financial statements, and can have any report emailed on a schedule. Export to Tally is coming soon.

### What if I am not sure EaseDesk suits us?

Use the free trial with your real items and a few real customers. It runs for 14 days with up to 5 users and asks for no card, so you can compare before you decide.
